Marley Dias was frustrated that she never studied books
about African American girls like herself at school. None
were even available in the school library.
Marley's concern has been echoed by some researchers,
whose studies suggest that young people gain self-
esteem from books that feature a positive, realistic main
character of their own ethnicity. And readers of other
ethnicities benefit from those same books by discovering
what they share in common with someone who is different
from them.
