Read this excerpt from the text "Race to Space."
On March 18, 1965, cosmonaut Alexei Leonov crawled out of his spaceship airlock and floated into space. Tethered to the ship, his 10-minute adventure caused a buildup of heat and pressure. He had to deflate his spacesuit before reentering the ship. Leonov said he was amazed at how round Earth was.
American astronaut Edward White exited the door of his spacecraft on June 3, 1965. He was thrilled to use an air nozzle to propel himself through space. He, too, was safely tethered to his ship. After 20 minutes, the ground crew had to order White to return to the capsule. Apparently, he did not want his feeling of floating freedom to end.
