During the american revolution, the british government hired german troops, called "hessians," to assist them in battling american colonists. on december 26, 1776, george washington defeated a large group of hessians in the battle of trenton. he returned to trenton a week later to draw british troops further south, and led a successful night march to capture princeton on january 3.
