A beam is being designed to work immersed in a heated fluid. The beam has to be strong enough to support a load and also be rigid enough so it does not deflect too much. Corrosion resistance is important, so the beam will be electroplated. Heat transfer characteristics are desired for heat dissipation. Five alternative materials have been suggested from which the choice will be made. a) Malleable C.I. ASTM 220 b) Gray C.I. ASTM A48 c) Steel ASTM A36 d) Al2024 T4
e) Al6061 T6
Five attributes have been identified, which are: a) Ultimate Strength Su (MPa)
b) Elastic Modulus E (GPa) c) Corrosion Resistance 3 =Good,2= Fair, 1=Poor. d) Heat Transfer Ability K(W/m⋅K)
e) Cost Dollars per Kg. Properties estimated for these five materials are as shown in Table 16. Determine the best material if supporting the weight (strength) is the number one priority followed by rigidity. Cost is more important than the heat transfer. Corrosion resistance is important but the cast iron and steel beams will be electroplated.
