Nerve transmissions occur when neurons are stimulated. Sodium and potassium ions play an important role during nerve transmissions. In this activity, you’ll use a simulation to see what happens when a neuron receives a stimulus. Follow these steps to use the simulation: Click Stimulate Neuron to start the simulation. To zoom in or out on the nerve, use the /- slider at the top left of the screen. Adjust the speed by clicking the options in the bottom left corner. Check options in the Show menu to focus on different parts of the process. Membrane potential is the “voltage” inside the cell, or the electric potential of the cell. There are two types of electrical charges: positive and negative. Ions are electrically charged atoms. To restart the simulation, click the orange refresh button at the bottom right of the screen. Run the simulation. When you’re done with the simulation, answer the following questions. Part A What happens to the sodium and potassium ions when the neurons are stimulated? How does their concentration inside and outside the cell change?
