In the plant Arabidopsis thaliana, proteins called photoreceptors help sense the ratio of red to far-red wavelengths of light in the environment. When the environment is shady, the red:far-red ratio is low. If a plant’s photoreceptors detect that the plant is growing in shade, they initiate a change in phenotype called the shade avoidance response.
