Obtain approximately 0.1 g ferric chloride (FeCl3) provided in a vial or test tube. Using a graduated cylinder measure and add 4 mL of water to the ferric chloride in the vial. Note the formation of a precipitate on the surface of the solution after a few drops of liquid soap have been added. Continue addition of all the remaining liquid soap with shaking. The white precipitate of iron(III) hydroxide, Fe(OH)3, settles on standing.
