A magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI, machine is used to get detailed images of parts of the human body that may be too sensitive or difficult to X-ray. A strong magnetic field interacts with elements, such as hydrogen, found predominantly in water in the body. When exposed to the magnetic field, the hydrogen atoms align with the magnetic field. A radio wave is then emitted through the body. This electromagnetic wave interacts with the hydrogen atoms. When the radio wave is shut off, the atoms release electromagnetic waves.
