What are the layers of the Earth?
Three main layers compose the Earth.
- The crust is the most external layer. It is located right upon the mantle and is divided into many plates, that move over it. It is composed of the oceanic basaltic plate and the uppermost continental granitic plate.
- The mantle is the second layer that composes the Earth. It is a very hot and dense rock that is capable of flow. Convection currents occur in this layer, rising hot melted material from the deepest region and sinking cold solid material from the surface.
- The core is the third layer and is divided into two sublayers,
- the solid internal core
- the liquid external core.
The core is mainly composed of Ferrum and nickel, and its temperature is about 6000ºC.
The extremely high temperatures are closely involved in material circulation, keeping the Earth's surface temperature, and in the Earth's electromagnetic field.
