The methods debate that started between L’Épée and Heinicke was an important part of Deaf history. This focused on whether oralism or manualism was the better method for teaching Deaf people how to communicate. Imagine that you had attended the public debate between L’Épée and Heinicke in Zurich. Which “side” would you support? Why?
I would support oralism because oralism is the system of teaching deaf people to communicate by the use of speech and lip-reading rather than sign language and i think that it’s easier than manulism.
Although it would be easier to teach with oralism since speaking is easier then signing, I would have to side with manualism because it gives the deaf a way to have fluent conversation without struggling to read someone’s lips.
