On March 1, 1836, a convention was held declaring independence from Mexico and the new Constitution of the Republic of Texas. In addition, Sam Houston was named as Commander of the Texas military. After a 13-day attack at the Alamo near San Antonio, Texans were defeated by a mission led by General Santa Anna.
