Heat is the transfer of kinetic energy from one medium or object to another, or from an energy source to a medium or object.
Such energy transfer can occur in three ways: radiation, conduction, and convection.
As heat is a form of energy, and therefore the SI unit of heat is also joules (J) which are defined as the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of a given mass by one degree.

For example, a lighted match (higher temperature object) will transfer heat to a large pan filled with lukewarm water (lower temperature object).
