I took the slope intercept form equation: y = 1/2x + 7, and transformed it into general form. This what I ended up with: -1/2x + y - 7 = 0. Because I am new to this type of math, I checked my work in the back of my math book. It turns out that the real answer is supposed to be: x - 2y + 14 = 0. I can not figure out how to get that answer. Can I get a step by step explanation on this?
It is x-2y+14=0, because from y=1/2x + 7. You subtract y on both sides of the equation, so there for you would have 1/2x - y + 7 = 0. And from there you would have to get rid of the fraction, so you would multiply by its reciprocal 2/1. Which is how you get x - 2y + 14 = 0.
Your equation is equal to the one in the back of the textbook! The textbook multiplied the equation by -2, to make all the numbers whole numbers and to make x positive. You can always bring it up to your teacher to double-check, and to ask which way they’d prefer it to be written
