The actual beginning of photography is considered to be the year 1839, when the French Academy of Sciences bought the rights to the daguerreotype from Louis Daguerre and released the invention for worldwide use. Many artists adopted the method. It was now possible to produce images without the professionalism of the artist. Thus, photography was believed to be the definitive replacement for the painter.  

Photography was the work of industry professionals until the American George Eastman released the easy-to-use Kodak camera in 1888. The following year, Eastman introduced a Brownie camera using roll film, which could take a hundred pictures on a film roll. The wide roll film dominated the market until the 1950s. At that time, it was left out and the market was conquered by motion pictures, which were originally intended for film cameras.
