Answer:Sino-Japanese war began when a rebellion took place in Korea. Both China and Japan sent troops into Korea and the result ended in China's defeat. Previous to this war, China was seen as the greatest power in Asia; however, this war represented a shift in power and now Japan was seen as the greatest power. Japan gained control of Taiwan and western colonies respected Japan and rid the idea of extraterritoriality.Previous to the meiji era, the shogun was in charge of Japan. However, the people became unhappy with the way the shogun was giving in to Western demands and so they wanted the emperor to take back power of Japan. Soon a young emperor retook power of Japan naming himself Emperor Meiji (enlightened rule). He learned from the Chinese' mistake of clinging to their traditional ways and not modernize and reform their ways. Emperor Meiji believed that modernization was necessary to keep Japan as a great power.The emperor who retook Japanese power from the shogun. His taking back of power is called the Meiji restoration and his rule was called the Meiji era. During his reign, he made many reforms. He emphasized the importance of education, he industrialized by building railroads. He also build telegraph lines, a national currency, and made Japan one of the leading industrial nations.
