In 2008, several U.S. states were in trouble. They were not getting enough rain. The area was very dry. This is
called a drought. The drought went on for over two years. Leaders had to make some changes. Schools served
lunches differently. They used plates made of paper. They did not wash the plates. That would have used too
much water. Instead, they threw the plates out. Some people brought in water from other areas, too.
