In the campaign of 1873, Mackenzie moved his troops to Fort Clark along the Mexican border. He attacked Apache and Kickapoo tribes and ended the threat of Native American raids along the Rio Grande. In the Red River Campaign, General Sherman joined Colonel Mackenzie to force out the few remaining Native Americans, attacking from five different angles and forcing the tribes to hide out in a canyon. Once in the canyon, calvary troops killed horses and destroyed supplies, forcing the Native Americans hiding there to surrender or flee.
