The war started in April of 1775 and ended in September 3rd, 1783
The Battle that ended the war was the Battle of Yorktown in which the last major British army in the area under General Cornwallis was pinned down in the city with the newly allied French navy blockading their escape by sea and the combined American and French armies by land. Surrounded, the British surrendered. This allowed the colonies to make the foundation of a new nation, the United States of America.
