In this sampling method we believe there are significant differences between groups comprising the population. Here we assign the population into groups and then try to replicate those percentages present in the population in our sample. Stratified Random Sampling is used when population is too heterogeneous, ie too dissimilar. This method includes dividing population into various dissimilar groups [stratas] , similar within themselves. Then, sample is taken from each strata (group), making it good representative of population variety.

If sampling structure is such that - sample units are selected from each strata, in proportion to the strata's presence in population - It is called Proportionate Stratified Random Sampling.

Eg : Dividing population in gender (men, women, other) stratas & taking sample from each strata - in proportion to particular gender in population
