During the Renaissance the demands of society shifted and became based on money instead of allegiances. The church had a difficult time adjusting to this new way of thinking. During, the Renaissance period, the society was composed of four social classes: the nobles, the merchants, the tradesmen and the unskilled. Cities grew and prospered during the Renaissance and rulers learned to tax the people. Trade grew between cities/states and other countries. As trade in goods increased, trade in ideas grew also. During Renaissance, the social structure was composed of four social classes. The nobles were treated well. The middle class of Florence was composed of shopkeepers and professionals. At the lowest level were the workers, who did not have job protection and were very dependent on their employers.
