I would say the first thing you should always do is graph the quadratic. See where the x intercepts are. If there aren't any, go onto step 2. If there are, make note of them. The quadratic formula will give you the same answer. You can use Desmos to graph the quadratic.
The second thing to do is to test what is under the square root (called the discriminate). If you get something weird like the square root of a minus number, then the graph should have told you that the quadratic does not cross the x axis at all.
When you have done those two things, you are ready to use the whole quadratic. Watch out for -b at the beginning. If b is - 4 (for example) the -b will make it 4
