The minerals you test are scratched by a penny and are measured on a scale of 1-10 on how durable they are. Stones such as quartz have a much stronger endurance to a scratch in the test than marble because of quartzes makeup. Another way to differentiate between the two would be to look at the mineral’s luster. The luster of a mineral is the way the light bounces off of its surface. There are different lusters that different minerals give off. There are two major types of lusters and they are Metallic or nonmetallic. A metallic luster is typically shiny while a nonmetallic luster can have many different types like musty or solid. Because quartz is a quartz it will be metallic because it is shiny while marble will be nonmetallic because it does not reflect light.
