Answer: The Great American Novel is of literary merit, and shows a snapshot of what America was like during the period of time. It also must be great and inherently American. They must embody that age of American history therefore freezing a moment of time. They do not have to be specifically about American culture or America, but they must show it in some form/way. The author does not have to be American but the novel must be!!!! Some of these novels are: To Kill a Mockingbird, Huckleberry Finn, The Great Gatsby, and Gone with the Wind to name a few.
