A cell has 50% solute and 50% solvent. The solution the cell is siting in has 30%
solvent, and 70% solute. What would happen to the cell, if the membrane only
allows osmosis to take place (DOK 2)?

Sagot :

If the membrane only allows osmosis to take place, the cell would shrink.

Osmosis is the thermal movement of water molecule (solvents) through a selectively permeable membrane (the cell membrane) from a region of low concentration of solute to a region of high concentration of solute.

When a cell contains 50% solute and 50% solvent is means it is isotonic.

When a solution surrounding a cell contains more solute (70%) and less solvent (30%) than the cell, it is said to be hypertonic.

Therefore when an isotonic cell is placed in a hypertonic solution, there would be movement of water molecules from the cell, which has low concentration of solute to the surrounding solution with high solute concentration.
