The water, The spoon doesnt melt the sugar, the sugar isnt melting the sugar bc if it was there will be no sugar to go into the water, and air isn’t melting the sugar bc there wouldnt be sugar AT ALL if the air was melting the sugar. So therefore the WATER is the solvent.
When adding sugar to water, for example, the water (solvent) molecules are attracted to the sugar (solute) molecules. Once the attraction becomes large enough the water is able to pull individual sugar molecules from the bulk sugar crystals into the solution.
