Sagot :
Osmosis is a necessary phenomenon in that it provides a way for which some substances can move through the phospholipids of the cell membrane, whilst others cannot.
The Phospholipid plasma membrane is semipermeable. What this means is that only hydrophobic molecules, as well as small polar molecules, will be able to diffuse through the lipid layer, ions and large polar molecules, however, are unable to pass.
Large and polar substances cannot diffuse across the membrane, and must instead rely on Integral membrane proteins by active or passive transport, mainly by facilitated diffusion.
Another form of diffusion is Osmosis, through which water will move across the membrane towards the area with lower solute concentrations. Therefore, placing the cells into an environment with a high water potential compared to intracellular water will cause water to pour into a cell that in reality does not need it. This will cause the cell to expand and ultimately explode.
