Hippocampus Amygdala and Hypothalamus.
These structure (limbic system) are located in the cerebrum, inferior to the temporal lobe and mask by the cerebra cortex. Other parts are Limbic cortex and Septal areas.
The hippocampus is the primary memory center of the brain. But also concerns with learning and emotions. It is responsible for long term memory stored in the cerebral cortex. It also the center for navigation and memorizing directions.
Amygdala- located anterior to the hippocampus is concerned primarily with control of emotions and formation of new memories.
Hypothalamus is concerned with homeostasis and other functions.
Therefore since the subject can still retained old memories, this shows the hippocampus is intact. However, because of the removal of amygdala, new memories and association of emotions to hippocampus is severed.
