This depends on the situation and the rule that I have to violate. Let's say for example, there was a guy trying to kill/kidnap me. Basically, a life-or-death situation. I would not attack until he took the first action, such as throwing a weapon at me or hurting me first. Then, I would legally have permission to defend myself since he attacked me first. This wouldn't affect only me, but also my daily life. Firstly, it wouldn't look that good on a job application or a resume (for college), which depends on your age. This is only an example and as the situation or the rule to be violated is not specified, my decision may change.
