The moral of the "roofleaf" story from Color Purple by Alice Walker is that greed can be destructive, and the destruction can take a long time to repair.

  • In Olinka village, they were known to build the roofs over their huts with the roofleaf.

  • The villagers were accustomed to planting roofleaf for use in the construction and repair of the roofs of their huts. This kept them sheltered from the sun and the rain.

  • A certain chief, however, became greedy for more cash crops to be sold to the white man that he mandated all villagers to trade more. The villagers did so but at the expense of not planting roofleaf.

In that period, a storm came one day and destroyed their roofs and their houses. Because they had stopped planting the roofleaf, they couldn't do repairs. They had to endure bad weather for months. It was another 5 years before they would have sufficient roofleaf again.
