The way the scientific community reacted to Alfred Wegener's theory on Continental Drift when he FIRST published it was they did not accept it because it was not solidly backed with sufficient proof.

As a result of this, we can see that Alfred Wegener theorized that the continents shifted many years ago and that their current position was not where they were at first and that is why many animals which looks alike are found in different continents.

With this in mind, his theory was at first rejected by the scientific community because of lack of sufficient proof as Wegener proposed that the spin of the earth was responsible for the continental drift and other scientists knew this was not possible.
