The Father is proably tramatized but he  wants to stay strong for mother,considering the fact that she is about to die. He is proably very hesterical but, must stay strong because it will make mother sad,and she will die dissapponted. He is thinking that if he cries or if he tries to make it better it will only make the situation worse. He feels like e is going to ruin something if he tries to stay with Mother. It's better to stay away because it's only gonna hurt Father because Mother is already heading home.
