Mary Wollstonecraft rejected the education in dependency that Rousseau advanced for them in Emile. A woman must be intelligent in her own right, she argued. She cannot understand that her husband will be intelligent! Mary Wollstonecraft directed that this did not contradict the role of the woman as a mother or a carer or of the role of the woman in the home. She affirmed that ‘meek wives are, in general, silly mother.
