As they are part of the Atlantic Ocean rather than the Gulf of Mexico, the waters are typically colder, with more interesting (from the beach view) tides, ebbs and flows. Having been to both, and if I want a more aesthetically appealing beach from the get-go, the Gulf coast wins. East coast beaches tend to be narrower, but there is room enough depending upon your interests and the time of year you go.
