I read a quote from this book called "No Longer Human" (Nigen Shikaku). I understand what he's trying to ask, but I don't have an equally understanding answer. Here's the quote:
"I don't understand; if my neighbors manage to survive without ki l l ing themselves, without going mad, maintaining an interest in political parties, not yielding to despair, resolutely pursuing the fight for existence, can their griefs really be genuine?
I think that the neighbor's grief is somewhat genuine as they are both "not yielding to despair" but at the same time not as they "maintain an interest in politilcal parties.
