Oxygen -hemoglobin Dissociation Curve

The oxygen dissociation curve is a graph which shows oxygen partial pressure along the horizontal axis and oxygen saturation on the vertical axis, represented as an  S-shaped relationship.

 When blood partial pressure changes, Oxygen and carbon dioxide are transported in the blood and taken into red blood cells by the hemoglobin

Now, during Exercise,  the following happens:

  • muscle cells getting more acidic causing a decrease in pH level
  • muscle contracts due to an increase in muscle temperature
  • increase in the partial pressure of carbon dioxide (from the working muscles)
  • increase of a byproduct molecule from glycolysis known as 2,3-BPG.

This causes the curve to shift  to the right and the shift is  referred to as the Bohr effect.
