“Colby, set up our tent and get a fire going,” Ruth directed her youngest son. “We’ll camp out for a spell,” she added with a grin. Her sons loved the outdoors. The bare earth and night sky were part and parcel of the blood that ran through their veins.
Upon hearing this, the man, who had introduced himself by now as a Mr. Calvin Thorpe from Chicago, protested fiercely. “I’m much obliged for your help with the birth of my daughter, but I cannot allow you to move my family into your home. We’ll find ourselves something temporary in the nearest town.”
