Why does the audience laugh here after Iago says "I had rather have this tongue cut from my mouth / Than it should do offense to Michael Cassio"?

The audience laughs when Iago says he would rather lose his tongue than say something bad about Cassio because all Iago does is say bad things about others, including Cassio.

Such a statement is ridiculous to say because Cassio has just gotten into a fight with Montano because of things Iago said. Iago is clearly a man of no scruples and a liar.

Iago and Cassio are characters in the tragic play "Othello", by Shakespeare. Iago is the antagonist, the villain in the story. In his pursuit of revenge against Othello, he will hurt anyone.

That includes Cassio. Iago uses Cassio as a pawn in his plans. He is jealous that Othello chose to promote Cassio over him, so he is constantly lying about the poor man. That is why it is ridiculous for Iago to say he would rather lose his tongue than say a bad thing about Cassio.
