Like usually, the European traders saw Japan as a wealth-making machine. It had all the things that every European colonists wanted gold, god, and glory. The waterways made it easier for it to trade and it was still developing but rich at the time, making it an easy target for colonization and trade. Japan however saw its country as more than a wealth making machine. The loved and respected it, thought of it as not only a nation but a society.
