In order to hear the activity, an audio amplifier is employed. The electrical activity of muscles during rest, a light contraction, and a strong contraction is measured by EMG. At rest, muscle tissue doesn't typically create any electrical signals. A brief period of activity can be seen on the oscilloscope when an electrode is introduced, but there should be no signal beyond that.
