To get rid of the Native Americans and their influences, Andrew Jackson removed the tribes from the former United States. The statute gave the president the authority to bargain with Indian tribes about being relocated to government property west of the Mississippi in exchange for returning to their traditional grounds.
The non-Indian peoples of the South, who were eager to get access to the areas occupied by the southeast tribes, strongly supported the measure. Missionaries of Christianity criticized the law's passage. Some tribes, such as the Cherokee, had no choice but to emigrate. Some, like the Seminoles, fought and disobeyed the law.
