At Çatalhöyük and Banpo there is evidence that women played an important role.
Çatalhöyük and Banpo were matriarchal societies where women assumed the authorial position in contrast to a patriarchal setup where men are associated with power. Here, women lead, descent was through the female line, and daughter inherited mother's property. They also worshipped a powerful mother goddess.
James Mellaart who was the first excavator at Çatalhöyük, discovered a figurine called The Seated Woman of Çatalhöyük, which according to him resembled a corpulent and fertile goddess as worshipped by these people. Thus, he labelled the society as matriarchal.
