The room was empty when she left. She could feel her memories echo behind her, like bullets in a war zone. Hallways,
hallways, door, street. Empty, empty, with everything gone. On the street corner, she saw a day-old newspaper crumpled in
the gutter. She leaned forward to look, thankful for the distraction and for its lifeless company. The air lacerated her cheeks
and sent the paper, along with others like it, flapping into the night. She held her breath, shrinking into her coat. Wild eyes
glistened between hat and collar. Stamping her feet, she awaited her fate.

around herself like a long woolen scarf. They insulated her as she walked through hallways and into the street. She breathed
quickly, in hesitation, then fully in relief, as she felt her body slowly warm itself from the inside. The years of solitude had not
taken her life, and for that she should be thankful. On the street corner, she stepped over a day-old newspaper, two coffee
cups, and a half-eaten bagel. She breathed slowly and steadily, her eyes alive and her mind active. A half-laugh, half-giggle
emerged from her lips, and she recognized it as her own. She danced from foot-to-foot, waiting for the others.
