Since I was small, I was ready to be seduced by the beauty of straightforward songs. My mother sang regularly around the home while doing chores and once told me that she used to sing to me while I was still in the womb since she had heard that a fetus can hear music. She also taught piano and voice.
She adored standards from the American Songbook, the famous collection of songs inspired by Broadway and Hollywood musicals from the 1930s through the 1950s. Over time, I came to appreciate these songs just as much as I did the hit songs of my generation. But they were merely there in the background when I was a kid.
