The increase in the size of the Mexican population forced the government to encourage its citizens to colonize further north to thwart the Anglo American aggressive activity. Land became scarce and the government had to issue land grants in northern New Mexico territory for the next ten years.
The most successful of these grants was the Sangre de Cristo award which lured in the earliest Hispanic settlement of San Luis, which was established in 1851.
