Mars Science Laboratory is a designation of a NASA space probe, launched on November 26, 2011, carrying inside a robot named Curiosity, a rover similar to the Spirit and Opportunity vehicles, used in the Mars Exploration Rover space mission for the planet exploration.
To solve the problem, engineers designed the kit to cut the parachute and use rockets for the final part of the landing sequence. About 60 feet (18 m) above the surface, the MSL's "sky crane" was deployed. The landing assembly hung the rover below the rockets using a 6 m rope.
