Sagot :
Using S waves to determine the core of the earth, we know that the outer core of the Earth is liquid since S waves (secondary seismic waves) cannot pass through liquid whereas the inner core of Earth is solid since the S waves can pass only through solid environments.
When there is a sudden disturbance of materials within the Earth, seismic waves are propagated through the subsurface which are recorded by the seismographs. This way seismologists are able to suspect the occurrence of an earthquake. But these seismic waves are even used to understand the nature of the Earth’s interior.
Seismic waves are mainly of three types: P or primary waves, S or secondary waves, and surface waves.
