The end of the American Civil War marked the end of slavery for so many black Southerners. Unfortunately for them, the war also left them landless and with little money to support themselves. White Southerners, seeking to control the freedmen (formerly enslaved persons), devised special state law codes called the Black Codes.

Black Codes, sometimes called Black Laws, were restrictive laws designed to limit the freedom of formerly enslaved African Americans. Although the Union victory had given about 4 million enslaved persons their freedom, the question of the freedmen's status in the postwar South was still very much unresolved.
