Wave Model of light behavior best helps explains the effect that light reflects off many objects.
The wave theory of light originated as a direct rival to the more widely accepted corpuscular hypothesis. In his essay "Micrographia," published in 1665, Robert Hooke sought to explain the existence of the color spectrum. In it, he proposed that light's vibrations were perpendicular to its propagation direction, similar to a surface wave in the ocean.
However, it was not until Dutch scientist Christiaan Huygens that the hypothesis really took off. In 1678, Huygens developed a mathematical model of the wave theory of light. He proposed that light was released as a sequence of waves from a source in all directions. He also hypothesized a mystery material termed "luminiferous aether" as the channel for these waves. Many aspects of light were described by the wave theory.
