In the late 1800s, the Back-to-Africa Movement organised thousands of African-American Arkansans who desired to emigrate to the Republic of Liberia. By the beginning of the 1920s, Garvey and the UNIA had established 700 branches in 38 states, spreading the "Back to Africa" message of black nationalism.
