Animal cells lack a cell wall and only have a cell membrane. A cell wall, which is found outside the cell membrane in plant cells and gives the cell its shape and strength. When kept in a hypotonic environment, cells absorb water from the surrounding medium and swell. Plant cells have a cell membrane that exerts pressure against the cell wall, which in turn applies pressure to the swelling cell but prevents it from bursting. Plant cells are able to endure internal cell swelling pressure considerably better than animal cells because of their robust cell walls.
